This Ain't A Scene...

This ain't a scene, its a god damn arms race, as Fall Out Boy recently sang.  From the day this site was announced we got a bit of stick for calling it Retro Scene, for some reason the word scene is like a poison to some people.  It has managed to get itself some bad connotations over the past few years, it has become synonymous with fashion, "me to"-ism, modifying without thought and one-upmanship.

I think this word needs to be reclaimed, the dictionary gives us a number of different definitions, I think the most relevant is "an area or sphere of activity, current interest" which pretty much sums us all up.  We're not always a community, we're not always a club, but we are always "a sphere of activity".  I guess the "area of current interest" bit could put some people off, but if things don't move forwards they stagnate, even the traditional non-modifying classic car scene moves forward by seeking out different cars and more historical information.

I'm quite fond of the fact that scene can also mean "the stage", which is how this whole thing is sometimes, dramas play out, characters enter and characters exit, events occur.

I got 99 problems...

There is a problem with the word scene though, or at least in as far as it has been used recently.  When a 'scene' forms around something it seems to turn into an arms race (seriously, that title wasn't just made up).  If you take low riders as the least controversial starting point (but it could easily be stretch tyres or rat look or cal look), at first it was all about going lower and lower a minor arms race in of itself, eventually the limits were pretty much reached.  After that it became about bouncing higher and higher, in addition to have the most crisp paint job.  Friendly competition is great, inter scene rivalry is what pushes it forwards.  However it can all become so very very serious and the fun starts to disappear as it becomes more and more like some kind of pro competition.  You also end up with this gap where no one can enter into the scene without being looked down on by some others within the 'scene', we loose the ability to just start out and be pretty average, if its not 100% brilliant then its not worth building, or that is how it feels.

We need cars at all points from the entry level cars to the top flight show cars and everything in between.  That is what makes a scene.

This is the first time we've done an opinion piece, what do you think?

I think you've raised - and put to bed - a very 'current' affair within our hobbyistic microcosm. The danger within opion pieces is that one (or a few peoples) opinions get transcribed to reach a lot of potentially conflicting opinions, with thus the ability to alienate potential 'subscribers'.

This particular issue though, shouldn't bend anyones nose out of shape as it is something i believe is part of all of our existances.

Who's jaw didn't hit the floor - even just for a second - when they first came across the Bosozuku 'scene', who wouldn't love the sounds and smell of day out amoungst the Goodwood Festival of Speed 'scene', or down the Drag Strip...thats also a 'scene'.

We're all in one somewhere, everyone just has to try to not let it dictate what they do.

Good work Guys

The car is a statement of us, our aspirations, identity, individuality, who we actually are.In the same way as generations have immersed themselves in Music and fashion, we the lover of the Motor car have sought to establish a unique identity through what we covet and what we drive. In the same way as Music influenced people to dress and follow the ideology of Punk, Rock and Roll,Heavy Metal etc, the car has had us seek our own niche in society. For certain, the Car is a statement, a Lada owner, unpretentious, careful, frugal, content. The Porsche owner, successful, go getting, confident, wealthy...and hung like a Chinese hamster. The "Scene" in which we are all part of is not one of creation by chance. It is merely a scene that has been about since the car was invented. We all seek to be different, yet we are all the same. Using the Punk rock analogy, the music is a statement, the Fashion is a statement, yet because people still sought even greater individuality, it spurred off into a different kind of music and Fashion culture.
Rat look, Lowriders, we are all one in the same, it all started from that one modified car and spawned generations of people seeking something different.
One upmanship? No doubt it happens and will always happen, primarily to seek approval from ones peers, to be seen as a bit smarter, incisive, intuitive. That is found in all walks of life, not just our "Scene".
Personally, I think the "Retro Scene" moniker, is spot on.
It is a scene,a movement and a hobby, what other word can rap those things up into a neat little package where everbody is fully aware of whats in it?
It may well, at times, seem like an arms race, then again, you dont have to join that particular race.
Finally, because i know ive bored the t*ts off you already, hats off to you Sir,while the WWW is here in all its glory, it takes individuals to pull it all together to make this "Scene" what it is.

Fantastic. You've put into words what we've all been thinking, especially the last line, 'We need cars at all points from the entry level cars to the top flight show cars and everything in between. That is what makes a scene.'

I hope I can remember this exact line when I'm next in the situation where someone shuns a car for being 'too show spec' or 'not show spec enough' If you catch my drift!

I dunno if its a huge problem, i think its just that those who like to imagine they are more "individual" than the rest of us are very vocal about it, they cry "scene" at the slightest provocation and there are those who will follow on just for the chance to complain about something.

Personally i like what i like and dislike what i dislike and if someone asks for an opinion they get one, i build my cars the way i like them and im not about to jump on anyone who dont wants to tell me how terrible they are, my old satin black, flamed mk1 escort was often at Ford meets lined up with the pastel cars on minilites and most of the comments i got were positive, even from the concours bufty boys and i think the majority of car lovers feel the same way.

I never feel my car is "not good enough" to show on a stand, i'm not forcing anyone to look at it. Laughing

I dont like roof racks and stretched tyres, but not cos they are "scene" just cos i personally dont like them, ignore the haters, its always the same way, the sensible folk are much quieter so things look worse than they are.

Just do what you do and be happy, who else in this life is so important their opinion is worth more than your own?

The RR show just recently attended showed that our 'scene' is pretty much perfect. Where else would you see ; Nissan Sunny, V8 Cortina, Lada Riva, Merc lowrider, Ford Transit, VW caddy, Fiat Uno, and Porsche all in one show!? There's no 'label' for us!
